EIFS (Exterior Insulation and Finish System)

An exterior insulation and finish system (EIFS) is a lightweight synthetic stucco wall cladding that consists of an insulation board attached to the substrate; an integrally reinforced base coat; and a textured, thin, synthetic protective finish coat. Stucco

Traditional stucco consists of a metal lathe attached to a wood substrate that is protected by two layers of moisture barrier, scratch coat, brown coat, primer, and elastomeric/silicone texture finish that can be in almost any color. It is a hard, dense, thick, non-insulating material that has been around for centuries.  The downside to Stucco is that in our climate with a varying freeze-thaw cycle, it can tend to crack.  There are mitigation steps we can take to help with this issue.

Direct Applied Finish System

Direct Applied Finish System is basically the EIFS without the insulation board. It includes a base coat with embedded mesh with a finish on top. It is used in repair situations where the existing finish has delaminated or is otherwise damaged. Our exterior construction company in Omaha typically does not do ‘patchwork’. Rather we fix from edge to edge for each panel so hide any patch marks and make it "new" again.
